Mileage is down a bit this week as I came of the bike last Sunday and the leg is a bit sore. Alan and myself were making our way back in over Fota bridge with the garmin reading 17mph when I rounded the corner leaning to my right to come straight into town.. my right pedal clipped the ground and flipped me over onto my left along the road...you know that feeling ya get when ya get hit really hard I think every bone in my body shook.. after a moment lying still and clipped into the peddles I unclipped and got up...judging by the face of the lady in the car waiting to go onto the bridge I knew it looked as bad as it felt....My first fall off the bike ( while moving) I picked up a nice tear mark below my left hip that bruised later so that coupled with the fact I was on nights was enough to take it easy starting last week. The bike didn't even get a scratch but I did manage to rip through some layers of clothing luckily I had picked up a new pair of heavy gloves the week before and they saved my hand big time it still ripped through them so if I hadn't got them my hand would have got a nice knock. I also had a pair of cycling shorts over a long pair of running leggings and it ripped through the shorts..I never wear that much clothes on the bike it was just luck for the first week I also had three layers on the top a long sleeve thermal top from lidle a short cycling Jersey and a high vis jacket I picked up a tear on the arm but nothing major... thankfully I was perished with the cold on the bike the week before so had taken the time to warp up well.. lucky me.. After we confirmed nothing was broken we set off for the last 4 miles back and did a short run of the bike.
Luckily I'm nearly healed and I'm back in full swing so looking forward to getting a long cycle in this weekend. I'm considering upgrading the bike so looking into a couple of options at the moment there`s so much choice out there is hard to nail down exactly whats the best value for money...but will be holding onto the one I have as its still in perfect nick thankfully.
It looks like things are progressing well with the Cobh Tri event. The final date will be the 12th of Aug and although Tri Ireland were unable to sanction the event due to the date clashing with other events they were very helpful and wished us the best of luck. Also the cobh town council and Titanic 100 team have given us there support and are also excited about the event taking place in Cobh. So roll on Escape from Spike our very own Cobh Tri club event.
Check out for yourself

Ouch! Glad to hear that there's no lasting injury. Escape from Spike sound like fun, although the bike and run gotta be hilly!
ReplyDeleteI was involved in plotting the course myself Grellan and the run is as flat as a pancake. Even flatter than the Marina if thats possible. Its a loop from the train station out parallel with the rail track left to the water front and back along the other side of the track right beside the sea and into town.More or less the last mile of the cobh 10 route by 2. Two loops for olympic.
ReplyDeleteThe cycle has hills it takes in about 5 miles of the cobh 10 route and follows the cork to cobh route from belvelly bridge into town some very fast down hill.
You`ll av to get the old speedo`s out if u`re around (:
